The Module's coordinator, Dr. Petra Weingerl, chaired a panel entitled AI and Human Rights in the Metaverse at the international scientific conference Global Conference on AI and Human Rights on June 14, 2024 at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana
The conference programOn Wednesday, 29 May 2024, a workshop on deterrence in the context of private enforcement of EU law was held at the Faculty of Law. Dr. Petra Weingerl organized the workshop and presented the results of her research, while guests Dr. Bert Keirsbilck (KU Leuven), Dr. Lena Hornkohl (University of Vienna), Dr. Karmen Lutman (University of Ljubljana) and João Otávio Bacchi Gutinieki (University of São Paulo/University of Vienna) presented complementary and alternative views on the issue. The workshop was moderated by Dr. Janja Hojnik.
The Module's coordinator, Dr. Petra Weingerl, chaired a round table on Friday, May 24, 2024, with which we marked the 20th anniversary of Slovenia's membership in the EU at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana. The attendees were welcomed by the Dean, Prof. Dr. Tomaž Keresteš, which was followed by an interesting discussion on the challenges facing the EU in the future, as well as a look back at Slovenia's membership in the EU over the past two decades. The guests of the round table were Slovenian judges at the Court of Justice of the EU: Dr. Marko Ilešič, Dr. Maja Brkan and Dr. Damjan Kukovec. It was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petra Weingerl, and the discussants were members of the Department of European and International Law.
- The Module's coordinator, Dr. Petra Weingerl, attended the conference Artificial Intelligence and Legal Challenges in Portorož (Grand Hotel Bernardin) on 20 and 21 May 2024. She gave a lecture on the topic New rules in the field of product liability: suitable for the age of artificial intelligence?
- The Module's coordinator, Dr. Petra Weingerl, attended the international scientific conference IDEAS24 ‘Inequality and the European Union. New frontiers in European Studies’ at the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (IES-VUB) in Brussels (Belgium) from 15 to 17 May 2024. Together with Dr. Matjaž Tratnik, she gave a lecture entitled Legal mobility vs. nationality based inequalities.
- On May 6 and 7, 2024, a conference on European private law was held at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, where Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petra Weingerl lectured on deterrence as a concept in the context of private enforcement of EU law.
- The Module's coordinator, Dr Petra Weingerl, gave a lecture on Consumer rights and Sustainable Development Goals on March 19, 2024, for the Public International Law (PIL) cluster (Essex Law School, University of Essex, England).
- In the week of January 15-20, the Faculty of Law hosted the PEPP program – Programme in European Private Law for Postgraduates. The PEPP program is organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Bettina Heiderhoff from the University of Münster, and the coordinator at our faculty is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petra Weingerl, who was the program coordinator and organizer of the event. It was attended by doctoral students from partner institutions (in addition to the PF UM, these are also the universities of Münster, Cambridge, Leuven, Valencia, Genoa, Zagreb, Silesia, Katowice, Hamburg (Bucerius) and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and Private Law in Hamburg).
The lecturers at the PEPP program were (in chronological order): Prof. Dr. Verica Trstenjak, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katja Drnovšek, Prof. Dr. Matjaž Tratnik, Prof. Dr. Martina Repas, Prof. Dr. Janja Hojnik, Prof. Dr. Vesna Rijavec, Prof. Dr. Emilia Mišćenić (University of Rijeka), Prof. Dr. Petra Weingerl, Prof. Dr. Bettina Heiderhoff, Prof. Dr. Damjan Možina (University of Ljubljana) and Prof. Dr. Tjaša Ivanc. As part of the program, we also went to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, where we were warmly welcomed, and in a conversation with the President, Dr. Matej Accetto, the students learned a lot of useful information about the application of EU law to the Constitutional Court and about cooperation with the CJEU. We also visited the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER).
- On Thursday, January 25, 2024, a round table discussion on current developments in the judiciary took place at the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor, with the common denominator being the overarching theme of "judicial independence". The discussion was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petra Weingerl. The guests of the round table were Prof. Dr. Miro Cerar and Honorary Prof. Dr. Igor Kaučič from the Ljubljana Faculty of Law, Vice President of the Supreme Court Marjeta Švab Širok, and Vice President of the Slovenian Judges' Association Dr. Andrej Ekart. They emphasized that respect for constitutional decisions is the basis of democracy and the fundamental principles of the separation of powers and the rule of law.
News about roundtable discussion
- On 19 December 2023, the coordinator of FURBUS, dr. Petra Weingerl, participated in the round table Human rights: challenges for the future. The event took place at the Faculty of Administration in Ljubljana and was organized in cooperation with SDEP and EWLA-Slovenia.
- Coordinator of FURBUS, dr. Petra Weingerl, participated in the Charter Xchange organized by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) on 11 and 12 December 2023.
- On December 7 and 8, 2023, a two-day international conference on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 70th anniversary of the ECHR and the anniversary of the legal validity of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights was held at the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor with eminent domestic and foreign experts in the field of international law. It was organized by Assoc Prof Dr Petra Weingerl and Prof Dr Matjaž Tratnik.
- Coordinator of FURBUS, dr. Petra Weingerl, organized a Doctoral Brunch Seminar for doctoral students on 7 December 2023.
- On Wednesday, 6 December 2023, the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor was visited by prof. dr. Matej Avbelj from New University, who gave a lecture within the Jean Monnet Module FURBUS. The topic of the lecture was the rule of law crisis in the EU.
On Wednesday, 22 November 2023, the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor hosted dr. Jasna Murgel, president of the Sonček Association. She lectured on the rights of persons with disabilities as part of the Public International Law course.
The lecture was held as part of the Jean Monnet Module Fundamental Rights and EU Business Law and Policy and as part of the Active Citizens Fund program in Slovenia.
- On Thursday, 9 November 2023, the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor hosted prof. dr. Jernej Letnar Černič from New University, who gave a lecture within the Jean Monnet Module FURBUS. The topic of the lecture was the protection of fundamental rights in the EU - the intertwining of national, EU and international legal protection.
- On 6 and 7 November 2023, the 1st Artificial Intelligence and Law conference was held in Portorož, at which Assoc Prof Dr Petra Weingerl chaired the section entitled Liability and compensation and dangers in connection with artificial intelligence. Within this section, she also held a lecture entitled Liability for damages and sanctions for the use of artificial intelligence (AI). She presented the risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence and the existing and proposed regulation of liability for damages caused by AI systems.
- On Monday, 5 June 2023, Dr Petra Weingerl, coordinator of FURBUS, was a speaker at the Ljubljana Conference on Business & Human Rights in Central and Eastern Europe: Good Practices and Challenges. She participated in a session on the role of international organisations and businesses.
- On Friday, 2 June 2023, Dr Petra Weingerl, coordinator of FURBUS, took part in a panel discussion on the 30th Anniversary of the EU Single Market at the 18th European Law Days at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana.
- On Friday, 26 May 2023, Dr Petra Weingerl, coordinator of FURBUS, gave a lecture at the Days of Labour Law and Social Security in Bernardin (paper entitled Civil Liability for Artificial Intelligence in the Employment Relationship).
- On 18 May 2023, Dr Petra Weingerl, coordinator of FURBUS, took part in the 28th Economic Operators on the Market Consultation in Portorož. She gave a lecture entitled Influencers and the protection of vulnerable groups in the EU.
- On 5 May 2023, Dr. Petra Weingerl gave a lecture entitled Sustainable Development and Consumer Law in the European Context at the international conference Sustainable Development, Tourism, and Heritage in the European Context at the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor.
- On 20 and 21 April 2023, Dr Petra Weingerl participated in the XXI Days of Civil and Commercial Law organised by the Institute of Comparative Law at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana. She gave a lecture in the panel on the new Consumer Act (lecture entitled Administrative and Criminal Sanctions in the Consumer Act in the Light of the Principle of Legal Certainty), and took part in the round table entitled Discrimination and Private Law.
- Module's coordinator dr. Petra Weingerl organised and chaired a roundtable celebrating 70 years of the Court of Justice of the EU on 22 December 2022 at the Faculty of Law in Maribor. Guests of the roundtable were dr. Marko Ilešič (judge at the Court of Justice), dr. Maja Brkan (judge at the General Court of the EU), dr. Damjan Kukovec (judge at the General Court of the EU), dr. Janja Hojnik (EU Law professor) and mag. Igor Strnad (Judge at the Appellate Court in Maribor).
- On December 15 and 16, 2022, an online conference on the 10th anniversary of the European Journal of Consumer and Market Law (EuCML) entitled "Enforcing EU Consumer and Market Law" was held. At the conference, dr. Petra Weingerl gave a lecture with the title The Jurisprudential Conflict on the Application of Consumer Law in Slovenia: Consumer Law as a Sword or a Shield? She addressed the enforcement of consumer protection law and the question of whether it is used in certain contexts as a "sword in the hands of consumers" or a "shield for providers of goods and services".
- On 6 and 7 October 2022, the module's coordinator, dr. Petra Weingerl attended the EU Fundamental Rights Agency's even in Vienna, Austria: "Promoting and Multiplying Knowledge on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union through Experts at National Level".
Between 28 and 30 September 2022, the 2nd Zagreb International Conference on the Law of Obligations was held at the Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences in Zagreb. The module's coordinator, dr. Petra Weingerl, held a lecture with the title "The interplay of contract law, the Digital Single Market, and sustainability goals in Slovenia: any room for improvement?" She presented the implementation of Directive 2019/771 on certain aspects of contracts for the sale of goods in the light of commitments to achieve more sustainable consumption and a circular economy.
- Module's coordinator dr. Petra Weingerl participated in the Workshop on Building a Legal System for a Circular Economy: Identifying Problems and Legal Solutions. She was a guest on a panel on consumer empowerment, circularity, and servitization.
